Jake Shields on continually learning

Jake Shields never allows himself to halt the learning process:

I'm always trying to change my training, I don't just get stuck in a rut. You see a lot of guys they kind of hit a plateau and quit learning, I'm always bringing myself around top fighters and trying to figure out what they're doing and learn more.

Rory MacDonald on growth from his loss to Carlos Condit

Losses are oftentimes the greatest eye-openers and learning experiences for mixed martial artists, including Rory MacDonald, who was defeated for the first time in his career against former UFC interim champion Carlos Condit:

It helped me grow as a fighter, big time, it was the most important fight in my career, so far, as far as growth, it opened my eyes to a lot of things, changed my outlook, and made me very hungry.

Excellence is a habit

All the greats, such as Anderson Silva, practice greatness and excellence on a daily basis. It's through repetition and diligence in drilling the extraordinary, that is becomes ordinary to them, and thus greatness flows through them in competition effortlessly.

Open yourself to greatness

Freddie Roach on Killer Instinct

Freddie Roach, who has worked with Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, as well as great boxers such as Manny Pacquiao, has the following to say on killer instinct:

One thing about fighters, we have to have a killer instinct. If we hurt somebody we know to go for the kill. For the wolf it's live or die, and for us in the ring it's live or die.

Greg Jackson on the most important thing to do as a coach

Greg Jackson contends caring for your fighters is the most pivotal thing for a coach:

The most important thing to do as a coach is care about your fighters because that's where everything comes from. If you care about them, then you're going to want the best for them, that's going to make you innovate, that's going to make you pull in people to help you, that's going to make sure you take care of them from top to bottom. If you're not in this to take care of your fighters, then you're in this for yourself, and then you should go and fight yourself. If you choose to be a coach that means to be in service to others.

Nate Diaz on putting his middle fingers up

I think we all respect fighters who show a lot of class and dignity and respect in the cage. But at the same time there are fighters who don't view the sport of mixed martial arts as much as a sport, but take into consideration the actual acts taking place in the cage for what they are. Nick and Nate Diaz, two of the greatest brother duos in the sport of mixed martial arts, are fighters who take this mentality. For them they don't feel there is much class in what they are doing in the first place, because it's a fight. So they don't feel the need to pretend that they are friendly with their opponent, who will be looking to knock them out, cut them up via elbows, choke them unconscious, or hyperextend their limbs. Many fighters who compete see this all being as part of the context of sport, but for some fighters like the Diaz brothers, they don't view it in that sense and don't mask their intentions and feelings towards their opponents. As long as they are scheduled to fight their opponent, they do not like them. They know their opponent will be trying to hurt them and damage them badly in the cage, so they are not interesting in exchanging pleasantries with them and putting on a false front of politeness towards them. It's sometimes off-putting to see for some people because we're accustomed to seeing quite a bit of respect between opponents, however this type of honesty that Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz bring to the game is also something that is refreshingly different and that honesty is something we can respect and appreciate:

Why should I watch my mouth? You're trying to knock me out and hit me with elbows and bloody my face in front of my friends and family and the whole world. So I don't care about putting my middle finger up to that.

Joe Rogan on the Martial Arts Way

Joe Rogan feels the most successful mixed martial arts fighters (i.e. Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva) are the ones that embody the spirit of traditional martial arts values:

The best way to pursue any discipline is the martial art way, and that's why it's been around for thousands and thousands of years. That whole idea of honor and discipline and respect, that's not there because just as a frivolous afterthought, that's there because thousands of years of training have taught people that is really the best way to excel and be and great.

Urijah Faber learned an important lesson from his sisters car accident:

Frank Mir on taking risks and pursuing dreams

Frank Mir on having the courage to pursue his passions:

I'm somebody that takes life by the balls...I'll go out there and take that risk and go ahead and pursue my dream to take a challenge that there might be a really good possibility that I don't succeed in; and I'll fail in front of thousands of people, but at least I went out there and took the journey.

Randy Couture on MMA vs Team Sports

Randy Couture makes a great point about how mixed martial arts breeds a stronger level of responsibility compared to traditional team sports:

The sport breeds a particular integrity where you have to take responsibility for yourself...In a team sport it's easy to say, "Well the team didn't play well today". That doesn't really fly. You have to take responsibility and accountability for yourself and step up and evaluate whether you're giving it everything you can give it.

Dean Lister on Bravery

GSP quote on bringing soldiers with him to a fight

Georges St-Pierre on hanging out with fellow fighters and trainers on the day of battle:

I try to stay away a little bit from normal people before a fight, because what I do is not normal, so to feel normal I need to hang out with people who do the same job as me. When you go to war you bring your soldiers with you; you don't bring your dad, your mom, your friends, your family, you bring the soldiers.
